How to choose a scooter deck

Your deck is the one part of a scooter you feel on every landing and every grind, so it is worth getting right. Four things decide whether a deck suits you. How wide it is, how long it is, whether it is shaped for street or park, and whether your fork and wheels will fit it.

Scooter deck width and length explained

Width is the number riders argue about most. Narrow decks around 4.5 to 5.25 inches are light and quick to whip, which is why park riders and smaller kids tend to run them. Mid widths from 5.5 to 6 inches are the all-rounder most riders settle on. Wide decks from 6.25 up to 7 inches are built for street. They give you more foot room on landings and more deck to lock onto in grinds, at the cost of a bit of weight.

Length follows height more than anything. Around 19 to 20.5 inches suits younger or shorter riders, 21 to 22.5 inches covers most teenagers and adults, and 23 to 24 inches is for taller riders or anyone who wants a long street setup.

Beyond that it comes down to feel. Riders who like to feel the deck under both feet on landings go wider, riders who want a lighter and faster whip go narrower, and plenty of riders change their mind after a season. If you are stuck, a 5.5 to 6 inch deck in a length that matches your height is a safe starting point.

The widest and longest deck we stock is the NATIVE Ventura at 7 by 24 inches, and the smallest is the Root Industries Type R Mini at 4.7 by 17.5 inches. Everything else sits between those two.

Street decks vs park decks

Street decks are wider, flatter and heavier, with boxed or squared-off ends and plenty of blunt space. They are made to take hard landings and slide on ledges and rails. The NATIVE Ventura, NATIVE Format, North Arca and Apex 6 Wide are street decks through and through.

Park decks are narrower, shorter and lighter so they spin and whip faster, and often have an angled front end. The Envy Prodigy Park, Apex 5 inch and Root Air RS are the ones to look at.

Plenty of decks sit in the middle and ride both well. The Envy AOSV6 and CORE SL3 are good examples if you ride park during the week and street on the weekend.

Will a new deck fit my scooter?

Almost always, yes. Every deck we sell uses an integrated headset, which is the industry standard, so any modern fork, bars and clamp carry straight over. The thing to check is wheel clearance. Most current decks take 110mm wheels and most also clear 120mm. The NATIVE Ventura clears up to 125mm with the brake removed.

Wheel width matters too. Older setups run 24mm wide wheels while newer ones run 30mm, and some decks ship with spacer kits for both. The Ventura, for example, includes axle sets for 24 by 8, 30 by 8 and 30 by 12 wheels.

Headset bearings are not included with a deck, so add a headset to your order if you are not reusing yours. Griptape is sorted. A sheet of Syndicate griptape ships free with every deck.

The scooter deck brands we stock, and who they suit

NATIVE builds street decks and nothing else. The Stem Deck is built for younger riders getting into street, the Format Deck is for riders stepping up their progression, and the Ventura is the flagship street deck with a size range from 6 by 22 up to 7 by 24. The Advent Refined is the signature line with a slightly narrower 5.75 to 6.25 inch footprint.

Apex has been the benchmark Australian premium deck for well over a decade. The 5 inch Angled and 6 Wide are built to last years and priced accordingly.

Envy covers the widest range of sizes with the AOSV6 Squad and Signature decks from 5.5 to 6.5 inches, plus the Prodigy Street and Park decks for riders coming off a complete.

Root Industries is the value pick, with the Type R Mini for small kids, the Type R GT and Air RS for park, and the Invictus for a stronger all-rounder.

What a scooter deck costs

Entry level decks sit under about $120. That gets you the Root Air RS v2, the Type R Mini or the NATIVE Stem, all of which are proper decks and not toy-store parts. The mid range from roughly $170 to $280 covers the Root Invictus, NATIVE Format, Envy AOSV6 and the NATIVE Ventura. Premium and signature decks run from $350 to $499, led by Apex.

The price difference mostly comes down to how the deck is made and how much machining goes into it. Forged and heavily machined decks cost more to produce and take more abuse.
